White fillings (composite resin) are what we use for the majority of our dental fillings. It is an excellent material to fix small to moderate sized cavities or fractures. Furthermore, it is bio-compatible, you can eat on the fixed tooth straight after the appointment and with the modern developments we can get a superb match of the filling with the rest of your tooth so even on a front tooth it isn’t recognisable.
Traditionally, amalgam (the silver filling material) was used to fix back teeth but we don’t tend to use this material much any more because it contains mercury, it is unsightly and this filling material plays a role in teeth developing stress fractures over time.
White fillings look great, but are not ideal for teeth require large repairs. In these cases a crown is usually the better long term solution.
